IONOS Webmail (formerly 1&1): How to Log In and Set Up Business Emails

What is IONOS Webmail (formerly 1&1)?

1&1 rebranded to IONOS in 2018. If you have an existing 1&1 hosting or email account, it is now managed through the IONOS platform. The webmail service allows you to access and manage your business email from any device with a browser and an internet connection, without configuring an email client like Outlook or Apple Mail. This guide covers how to log in, set up business email accounts, upgrade plans, and manage key features.

How to log in to IONOS Webmail

There are two ways to access IONOS Webmail:

  1. Direct login: Go to webmail.ionos.com, enter your full email address and password, and click Sign In.
  2. Through the IONOS control panel: Log in at ionos.com with your account credentials. Navigate to Email & Office, then click on the email address you want to access. This will open Webmail directly.

If you cannot log in, use the password reset option on the IONOS My Account page. Webmail passwords cannot be recovered directly from the webmail interface — they must be reset through the main IONOS account.

How to set up a new business email address

  1. Log in to your IONOS account at ionos.com.
  2. Go to Email & Office in the menu.
  3. Click Add Email Account.
  4. Enter the email address prefix (the part before the @), set a password, and choose the email plan.
  5. Click Create Email Account to confirm.

The new address will be active within a few minutes and accessible through Webmail or any email client using IONOS’s IMAP settings.

IONOS Webmail plans and pricing

Every IONOS hosting plan includes at least one basic email account. The basic plan provides 2 GB of storage per account. For business use, IONOS offers the Mail Business plan, which includes 50 GB of email storage per user, premium spam filtering, virus protection, and real-time data synchronization. Pricing for Mail Business starts at around $5 per month for a single user, with reduced per-user pricing for teams of five or more.

How to upgrade from basic to business email

  1. Log in to Webmail at webmail.ionos.com.
  2. In the left sidebar, look for the storage upgrade prompt or navigate to account settings.
  3. Select the email account you want to upgrade.
  4. Click the upgrade option (crown icon) and select the Mail Business plan.
  5. Review and accept the terms, then complete the payment.

How to enable or disable upgrade permissions for team members

If you manage email accounts for a team and want to prevent users from upgrading their own accounts:

  1. Log in to your IONOS account.
  2. Go to My Products, then Email and Web.
  3. Click More at the bottom of the page.
  4. Select Webmail, then Manage Permissions.
  5. Toggle the upgrade permission on or off for individual accounts.

How to import contacts to IONOS Webmail

  1. Export your contacts from your previous email service in CSV or vCard format first.
  2. Log in to IONOS Webmail.
  3. Navigate to the Address Book tab.
  4. In the left sidebar, go to Private, then Contacts.
  5. Select Import/Export from the dropdown menu.
  6. Choose CSV or vCard as the import format, locate the file, and click Upload.

Your imported contacts will appear in your address book immediately after the upload completes. For users migrating from Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, IONOS Webmail also supports manual IMAP migration. More details are available in IONOS’s official email help documentation.
